Emma Blake is returning to the Beaumaris Theatre stage this August in The Witches. We asked her to step into the spotlight so we can get to know her better.
What was your first role in the theatre?
I was an usher for my high school’s production of Guys and Dolls. It was fine, but I was envious of everyone who was actually on stage. The next production we did was Annie, and I made my performance debut as the most enthusiastic homeless person you ever did see.
Who in the show is most like their character?
I would have to say the lovely Denise, who plays Grandmother. She has an absolute heart of gold – both on-stage and off. We’ve only known each other for a few weeks, but she’s such a warm and beautiful presence in the rehearsal room, and her scenes with Alexander (playing Boy) are heartfelt and tender.
Without giving anything away, what’s your favourite line of dialogue from the show?
“I am having a plan – a giganticus plan!”
What was your most memorable theatrical experience?
A Year with Frog and Toad, with Beaumaris Theatre will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the little show that could - small in scale but full of heart. With just five of us in the cast, we really had to have each other’s backs and know our lines, harmonies, blocking and direction inside out. There were plenty of laughs along the way too - like the giant evil frog made from an umbrella, or the time I nearly toppled the set because I got way too into dancing behind it during the entr’acte. It’s a show that always makes me smile when I think back on it.
What place brings you the most joy?
Aside from the theatre, I love getting along to my local parkrun every Saturday morning. It’s a weekly timed free 5km event where you can walk, jog, run or volunteer. My local event averages around 400-500 participants each week! There’s a real sense of community and I love the camaraderie you build with total strangers. It’s the best way to start the weekend!
What is your favourite midnight snack?
I’m a sucker for Oreos. Choceur chocolate from Aldi is also top tier.
What is your dream show to work on?
& Juliet is high on my list so I’m absolutely stoked that the rights have now been released for amateur theatre groups. I also fell in love with Groundhog Day when it came to Melbourne last year. Such a fun and clever show!
When you are not at the theatre, where can you be found?
Either on my couch watching Friends for the 1000th time, mooching a meal from my parents or continuing my ongoing mission to try and pet every dog in the world.
